What’s On

Most activities require a booking and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all sessions. Junior Rangers is not a club; no membership is required to take part. Junior Ranger programs are run mostly during school holidays and on some weekends.

What was life like as a child of a wealthy landowner in the 1880's? Step back in time and find out first hand! There's heaps of fun to be had playing with old fashioned toys and games, dressing up in clothes from the Victorian era and testing your writing skills on a slate at the school table.

Remember; bring your camera to get some photos! Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Junior Ranger - Life as a miner

Location: State Coal Mine - Garden Street, Wonthaggi
Cost: $17.50 per child (no charge for accompanying adults)

Come along dressed as a miner* and discover what it was like to go underground for 'work' by experiencing it yourself!  Make your own crib bag and assemble your lunch ready to take underground and eat in the crib room like the miners did.

*Best dressed wins a prize.

Location: Coolart Wetlands and Homestead - Somers, Victoria. Melways ref: 193 J9
Cost: Free

Learn how to use binoculars and get a close look at some of Coolart's birds!
Take a walk with the Park Ranger to Minsmere bird hide on the wetlands where you'll learn 'What bird is that? How do they fly? Where do they nest? What do they eat?'

This activity is suitable for primary school aged children and their families. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Meet at the Visitor Centre at 1pm.

Remember to bring your sun protection, appropriate clothing for the weather, drinking water and sturdy footwear. BYO binoculars if you have them.

Location: State Coal Mine - Garden Street, Wonthaggi
Cost: Free

Children can experience the fun of games played before the invention of computers.
Fun team activities where numbers permit. 
Three-legged races, bocce, horse shoe throw, quoits, tunnel races, hoop'n'stick, fill the skip, sack races, hopscotch, skipping races and skittles. Come prepared to laugh and have fun!

This activity is suitable for primary school aged children and their families. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Prom provided rich food sources for the Gunai Kurnai and Boon Wurrung Bunurong people. See demonstrations of how traditional hunting tools were used and try your hand at boomerang throwing.

To the Gunai Kurnai and Boon Wurrung Bunurong people, the Prom is part of a spiritually significant land called Yiruk or Wamoon. Discover the rich Indigenous history of the Prom.

Using special symbols, Indigenous people have a tradition of storytelling.  Discover what these symbols mean and  make your own stories using traditional Aboriginal symbols.
